SFI gives you basic knowledge of Swedish!
SFI stands for Swedish for Immigrants and gives you basic knowledge of Swedish so that you can communicate both in speech and in writing. The course is also intended give participants an introduction to Swedish society. The studies are based on your personal circumstances and experience. When you have finished SFI, you can continue to take Swedish at Komvux or upper secondary school if you wish.
The three steps in SFI
Step 1 is for people who have no experience of school or have not attended compulsory school and/or are beginners in Swedish and need to learn the Swedish alphabet.
Steps 2 and 3 are for people who have knowledge equivalent to compulsory school from their home country. The course starts with language suitable for beginners.
Who can take SFI?
To be eligible for SFI, you must be a resident of Sweden, have reached the age of 16 and have no knowledge of the Swedish language. If you can speak Norwegian or Danish, you are not eligible for SFI. You apply through Komvux in your home municipality or through any of the organisations that gives SFI courses. They will then help you with any language texts and study plan etc.
Combine SFI with work or other studies
Studying SFI can also be done in collaboration with the employment service, where you get the opportunity to practice the language in a work environment. It can also mean that you come into contact with working life through work practice. It is also possible to combine studies in SFI with other education in Sweden or abroad. Remember that you must have taken SFI to be able to take an education course in Swedish.
